A sore throat can be the result of several causes, such as viruses or bacteria. Although a sore throat is a symptom in and of itself, it can be accompanied by several other symptoms. For example, if you have a viral infection, other symptoms may include a runny nose, coughing, and a low-grade fever.
There are also bacterial infections (such as
strep throat) that cause a sore throat.
Mononucleosis is a less-common reason for a sore throat. It can cause a lack of energy, body aches, chills, and loss of appetite.
