Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant medication often used for the treatment of nasal congestion due to allergies or the common cold. It is also approved to relieve sinus congestion and pressure. The drug works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the lining of the nose and sinuses; this action causes the blood vessels to constrict, allowing less fluid to leave the blood vessels and decreasing inflammation. Products containing this drug are available over the counter and come in several forms.
