Antibiotics and Pneumonia

Things to Consider

If you are prescribed antibiotics to treat pneumonia, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • It may take three to five days before you start to feel better. Usually, the fever is the first symptom to get better (three days, on average). The cough and fatigue can take an average of 14 days to get better, and one in three people have at least one symptom still present after one month (most commonly fatigue). The average time to return to work is six days.

  • The amount of time and how often you need to take your medicine will vary based on the type of antibiotic. You should take this drug exactly as prescribed and for the entire period, even when you start to feel better. If you stop too soon, the pneumonia may come back.

  • Don't save your antibiotics for another time. If you have any left over after completing your course, flush them down the toilet.
