Neti Pot Side Effects

Nasal burning, nosebleeds, and an unpleasant "drowning" sensation are some of the side effects that have been reported with neti pot. These problems can usually be alleviated when you make a few changes in the way that you use the device (such as changing the water temperature or salt content). Proper technique can help minimize side effects of the neti pot.

Can a Neti Pot Cause Side Effects?

Some people may experience side effects when using a neti pot. Proper technique and the use of an appropriate saline solution is likely to minimize such problems (see How to Use a Neti Pot for more information), although some people may still find side effects to be a problem.

Possible Side Effects of Neti Pots

Possible bothersome (although usually not serious) neti pot side effects that have been reported include:

  • Nasal burning
  • Pain
  • Stinging
  • Irritation
  • Nosebleeds
  • An unpleasant "drowning" sensation
  • Draining of the saline solution from the eyes.

If you experience such side effects from your neti pot, you may benefit from making a few changes. Adjusting the water temperature or the salt content may make the experience more comfortable. Also, it is essential to keep your neti pot clean and free of allergens or other potential problems (such as bacteria or irritants).

Adjusting the angle and making sure to keep your mouth open may help reduce the unpleasant drowning sensation, although many people will continue to experience this sensation to some extent.

In general, serious side effects are not expected from using a neti pot.
