Neti pot usage seems to be safe for most people, especially if care is taken to avoid contamination of the pot and the solution. Some people may be more likely to experience problems with the neti pot. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using it if you:
- Get frequent nosebleeds
- Have a medical condition affecting the nose or sinuses
- Will be having nasal or sinus surgery.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
- Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant (see Neti Pots and Pregnancy)
- Breastfeeding (see Neti Pots and Breastfeeding).
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

There are various different "recipes" for creating a saline solution for use in a neti pot. If the salt concentration is too low or too high, nasal irritation or pain could result. A proper technique for using the pot is important in order to reduce the "drowning" sensation. With practice, using a neti pot may become easier and more comfortable.
