Neti Pot Benefits
There appear to be many benefits of using a neti pot. The nasal irrigation device is claimed to be beneficial for treating various nasal or sinus conditions (such as allergies or sinus infections), promoting nasal hygiene, and aiding in recovery after nasal surgery. These benefits seem to apply to children as well.
Claimed Neti Pot Benefits
Neti pots are small pots used to irrigate the nasal and sinus cavities. Using a neti pot has been claimed to be beneficial for the following uses:
- Promoting nasal hygiene (as part of one's daily routine, much like brushing the teeth)
- Aiding in recovery after nasal surgery
- Treating the following conditions:
There is some evidence that using a neti pot may be effective for some of these uses (see Do Neti Pots Work?).
How Does the Neti Pot Work?
A neti pot works by flushing out the nasal cavity with a saline solution (salt water). Using the pot, the solution is poured into one nostril and comes out the other. The saline flow flushes out mucus and allergens or irritants. It is also thought that the saline may also reduce swelling of the lining of the nasal and sinus cavities and may also improve the function of tiny, hair-like structures (called cilia) that line the nasal and sinus cavities, helping the cilia to more effectively remove bacteria, mucus, allergens, or irritants.
