Neo-Synephrine
® (
phenylephrine or
oxymetazoline nasal spray) is a non-prescription medication used to temporarily relieve sinus and nasal congestion due to various causes, such as
allergies or the
common cold. Like other decongestant nasal sprays, this medication should not be used for more than three days in a row, due to the risk of the congestion becoming worse.
Neo-Synephrine comes in different forms -- some contain oxymetazoline and others contain phenylephrine.
Who Makes This Medication?
Neo-Synephrine is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare, LLC.
The active ingredients in Neo-Synephrine products (phenylephrine or oxymetazoline, depending on the particular product) belong to a group of drugs called decongestants. Specifically, they work by stimulating certain receptors known as alpha-adrenergic receptors. In the lining of the sinuses and nasal passages, this action causes the blood vessels to constrict, allowing less fluid to leave the blood vessels and decreasing inflammation. This helps to relieve nasal and sinus congestion.
