Clinical studies on breastfeeding and Tavist show that the medication passes through breast milk. While some sources warn against using this drug while breastfeeding, others consider small and occasional doses to be compatible with breastfeeding. If you are taking this medicine and breastfeeding at the same time, be sure to watch for any side effects in your infant.
An Overview of Breastfeeding and Tavist
Tavist® Allergy (clemastine fumarate) is a non-prescription antihistamine medication that passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding, talk with your healthcare provider before taking Tavist.
Is Taking Tavist While Breastfeeding Safe?
Tavist passes through breast milk. The prescribing information for prescription clemastine products states that breastfeeding women should never take the medication, since newborns and premature infants are especially sensitive to the medication. However, other sources consider small, occasional doses of Tavist to be compatible with breastfeeding.
Theoretically, it is possible that Tavist could affect a woman's milk supply, since the medication can suppress prolactin (a hormone important for breast milk production). However, this is probably not an issue for women who are well-established with breastfeeding.
If your healthcare provider decides that it is okay for you to take Tavist while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any changes or side effects (such as unusual drowsiness or irritability) in your breastfed child.
Talking With Your Healthcare Provider
You should talk with your healthcare provider about breastfeeding while taking Tavist. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
