Cold Home > Sinupret and Pregnancy

Preliminary studies on pregnancy and Sinupret show that the supplement is probably unlikely to cause birth defects or other problems. Since this particular supplement has been used extensively in Europe for many years and has been taken by numerous pregnant women, significant problems are not expected. If you are taking it and pregnancy occurs, talk to your healthcare provider about any potential risks.

Is Sinupret Safe During Pregnancy?

Sinupret® is a popular herbal supplement promoted to help support healthy sinus and respiratory function. At this time, it is not known with certainty if it is safe for pregnant women to take Sinupret. Preliminary studies do not seem to suggest a link between the supplement and birth defects or other problems.
It should never be assumed that natural products are automatically safe for pregnant women. This is a mistake many pregnant women make. Pregnancy often limits the prescription and non-prescription drugs that are available for a woman to take. As a result, pregnant women often seek safe alternatives, sometimes assuming that herbal supplements are always safe. This is simply not the case. Herbal supplements can be marketed in the United States without any evidence that they are safe (or even effective) for anyone, including pregnant women.
It should be noted that Sinupret has been used extensively in Europe for over 70 years and (as a result) has been taken by many pregnant women. While this does not "prove" that the supplement is safe for pregnant women, it certainly suggests that significant problems are not expected.

Final Thoughts

If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to have a discussion with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement, including Sinupret. This is very important, even if you think your healthcare provider will not understand your choice or will discourage the use of alternative medicines.
