Available only by prescription, Ceftin® (cefuroxime axetil) is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, such as strep throat, sinus infections, bladder infections, and ear infections. The medication comes in oral suspension (liquid) and tablet form. Typically, Ceftin is taken twice daily.
There are several factors that may affect your dosage of this medication, including the form of Ceftin used (tablets or liquid), other medical conditions you have, and your age and weight. It is important to note that the tablets and liquid are not equivalent on a mg-per-mg basis. For example, a 500 mg tablet is not equivalent to 500 mg of the liquid.
When taking this medication, it is important to take it exactly how your healthcare provider recommends -- this ensures a safe, effective treatment process. Do not try to crush the tablets, as they have a very unpleasant bitter taste that lingers. Also, do not stop taking this medication too soon, as it can cause antibiotic resistance.
