Ceftin Drug Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Ceftin is combined with any of the drugs listed above.Birth Control Pills
Despite the longstanding belief that antibiotics interact with birth control pills, several studies have shown that almost all antibiotics do not increase the risk of pregnancy in women taking birth control pills. Nevertheless, there have been reports of birth control pill failure in women who have taken antibiotics. Ask your healthcare provider about whether you need to use a backup method of birth control while taking Ceftin.
Diuretics
Like other similar antibiotics that are removed from the body using the kidneys, Ceftin should be used cautiously in people who take diuretics, as some diuretics can decrease kidney function. If you take a diuretic, make sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking Ceftin.
Medications to Lower Stomach Acid
Medications used to decrease stomach acid may decrease the absorption of Ceftin. Check with your healthcare provider before taking such medications together.
Oral Typhoid Vaccine
Ceftin may decrease the effectiveness of the oral typhoid vaccine. If you have taken Ceftin recently or are currently taking this medication, you may need to postpone your oral typhoid vaccine for at least a day after taking Ceftin.
Probenecid (Benuryl)
Probenecid can decrease the body's ability to remove Ceftin from the blood, potentially leading to high Ceftin blood levels. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
