Health Benefits of Guaifenesin

Guaifenesin, commonly available in medications like Mucinex® and Robitussin®, is beneficial as an expectorant -- in other words, it helps make coughs more productive by loosening phlegm and other bronchial secretions so that they are easier to cough up. The medicine comes in many different forms, including tablets and syrup, and is generally taken every 4 to 12 hours, depending on the product.

Guaifenesin may also offer benefits for women who are trying to become pregnant. By acting on cervical mucus and thinning it the way it thins bronchial secretions, the medication may make it easier for a woman to conceive. A healthcare provider should be consulted, however, before using guaifenesin for this purpose.
