What Is Gemifloxacin Used For?

Is It Safe for Older Adults to Use Gemifloxacin?

Gemifloxacin may be used to treat infections in older adults. However, older adults may have an increased risk for certain gemifloxacin side effects, such as tendon problems (see Factive and Tendon Rupture). In addition, because kidney function declines with age and gemifloxacin is removed from the body by the kidneys, older adults may need a lower gemifloxacin dose.

Are There Off-Label Uses for Gemifloxacin?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for something other than bronchitis or pneumonia. This would be known as an "off-label" use. For example, gemifloxacin may be used off-label to treat other types of infections, as long as there is a good reason to believe that the bacteria causing the infection will be susceptible to gemifloxacin.
