Drug Interactions With Dextromethorphan

Ergot Medications
Taking dextromethorphan with an ergot medication can increase your risk for a serious reaction known as serotonin syndrome (see Precautions and Warnings With Dextromethorphan for more information, including symptoms of serotonin syndrome). Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Seek immediate medical attention if you have any symptoms of serotonin syndrome.

Linezolid
Linezolid is an antibiotic that has monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) properties. Because dextromethorphan should not be taken within two weeks of an MAOI, it is important for people who are taking (or have recently taken) linezolid to not use dextromethorphan.

Most Antidepressant Medications
Combining dextromethorphan with medications that affect serotonin, including certain antidepressants, may increase your risk for a potentially serious problem called serotonin syndrome (see Precautions and Warnings With Dextromethorphan for more information, including symptoms of serotonin syndrome). Although this is a rare problem, it can be very dangerous. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking dextromethorphan with an antidepressant. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of serotonin syndrome.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Taking dextromethorphan with an MAOI increases the chance of developing a potentially life-threatening problem known as serotonin syndrome (see Precautions and Warnings With Dextromethorphan for more information, including symptoms of serotonin syndrome). Do not take dextromethorphan if you have taken an MAOI within the past two weeks. Also, wait two weeks after stopping dextromethorphan before taking an MAOI.
