Generic Delsym

At this time, a generic version of Delsym (dextromethorphan polistirex) is not available. The manufacturer holds the exclusive rights to manufacture this cough suppressant until April 2017. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available. However, other patents for specific uses of Delsym or lawsuits may delay the release of a generic version.

Can I Buy Generic Delsym?

Delsym® (dextromethorphan polistirex) is a nonprescription medication approved as a cough suppressant. At normal dosages, Delsym works mostly in the brain. In particular, it works in the "cough center" located in the brainstem, increasing the "cough threshold." This action suppresses coughing.

Delsym is made by Reckitt Benckiser. It is not yet available in generic form.

When Will Generic Delsym Be Available?

The patent for Delsym currently expires in April 2017. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Delsym uses. Once the medication goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Delsym drug.

Is Dextromethorphan a Generic Delsym?

No -- dextromethorphan is the active ingredient in Delsym, but it is not a generic version of it. Dextromethorphan is also the active ingredient in several other products, including various generic ones. However, none of these other products are equivalent to Delsym.

Delsym is different from other formulations of dextromethorphan, in that it comes in the form of a long-acting liquid. Some of the medicine is released immediately after a dose, providing fast relief, but some of the dextromethorphan is contained in specially coated particles that dissolve slowly in the intestines, providing long-lasting relief.
