Pneumonia Vaccine Information
Two pneumonia vaccines are currently available: Pneumovax® and Prevnar 13®. These products come in the form of an injection and help prevent:
- Bacterial meningitis
- Other pneumococcal diseases.
They are available in brand-name form only. Pneumovax is injected either into a muscle (intramuscularly) or just under the skin (subcutaneously), usually in the upper arm. Prevnar 13 is given intramuscularly in the thigh or upper arm.
To ensure your safety with the pneumonia vaccine, make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on any other medications you are taking, including nonprescription drugs, as well as any allergies you may have, including to any drugs, foods, dyes, or preservatives. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
