Guaifenesin Medication Information

Guaifenesin is a drug often used to treat chest congestion. Included in medicines like Mucinex® and Robitussin®, it works by thinning phlegm and other bronchial secretions, which makes them easier to "cough up." Guaifenesin is not appropriate for treating a dry, hacking cough.

Before taking guaifenesin, information on the medication's safety and possible side effects should be reviewed. For example, people with asthma, COPD, emphysema, or other breathing problems may not be able to take this product.

Although rare, kidney stones are a possible side effect of this drug, so it is important to drink plenty of water while taking it. This will also improve the effectiveness of guaifenesin. If you have any concerns, consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist before beginning treatment.
