Gemifloxacin Drug Information

Gemifloxacin mesylate (Factive®) is available only by prescription and is approved for treating certain types of bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia and bronchitis. This medication is part of a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short, and works by interfering with the bacteria's ability to multiply.

Gemifloxacin comes in the form of a tablet. It is typically taken once a day for five or seven days, depending on the infection being treated and various other factors.

Because gemifloxacin is not suitable for everyone, make sure your healthcare provider has complete information on your medical history and any other drugs you are taking (including nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements).

Although most people do not have any problems while taking this antibiotic, gemifloxacin can cause side effects, such as diarrhea, headaches, and a rash. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be mild and easily treated.
