Delsym Medication Information

Available without a prescription, Delsym® (dextromethorphan polistirex) is a medication used to suppress a cough. This long-acting drug is the only 12-hour, over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrup available in the United States. It is specially formulated so that only a portion of the active ingredient is released immediately after a dose, while the rest is contained in specially coated particles that dissolve slowly.

Before using this medication, make sure to carefully review Delsym's safety information. For example, you may not be able to use this cough medicine if you have certain health conditions, such as asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis. Also, talk to a healthcare provider if you have a cough that is accompanied with phlegm; a cough that lasts more than seven days; or a cough that is accompanied by a fever, a rash, or a persistent headache.
