Chronic Sinus Infection Treatments

Chronic sinusitis (sometimes referred to as a chronic sinus infection) can be challenging to treat. Your healthcare provider may recommend several different options for this condition. For example, steroid nasal sprays are often prescribed to reduce inflammation. When combined with nasal irrigation and other home remedies, these medicines are helpful in treating nasal congestion and blockage.

Antibiotics are often prescribed, even though it is thought that chronic sinusitis is caused more from inflammation than a bacterial infection. However, this medicines are usually needed at one time or another -- people with chronic sinusitis will almost always develop a bacterial infection from time to time.

Although chronic sinusitis might get better for a while, symptoms tend to return, regardless of treatment. Therefore, treatment for a chronic sinus infection is focused on decreasing symptoms and improving the quality of life by:

  • Controlling the inflammation and swelling
  • Maintaining adequate drainage of the sinuses
  • Treating any infection that may be present
  • Limiting the number of recurrent episodes.
