An Introduction to Ceftin Side Effects
As with any medicine,
Ceftin® (
cefuroxime axetil) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Ceftin
Ceftin has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials. Based on information from these trials, the most common side effects of Ceftin included:
- Diarrhea or loose stools -- in up to 10.6 percent of people
- Nausea and vomiting -- up to 6.8 percent
- Vaginitis (vaginal inflammation or infection) -- up to 5.4 percent
- Dislike of taste (for the oral suspension form) -- up to 5 percent
- Diaper rash -- up to 3.4 percent.
Changes in certain laboratory tests (such as an increase in liver enzymes) were also commonly seen (in about 1 percent of people). These changes were temporary and probably did not indicate any real problems.
A specific type of reaction known as the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction was seen in up to 5.6 percent of people who were given Ceftin to treat
Lyme disease. This reaction is thought to be the result of toxins released from the death of a large number of bacteria. This reaction is not expected to occur when taking Ceftin for more typical uses (such as to treat
ear infections or
strep throat).
