Is Astragalus Safe?

Many people are concerned about the safety of astragalus. Although this supplement is probably safe for most people, you should consult your healthcare provider before taking it if you have had an organ transplant or have an autoimmune disease. It is important to know that guidelines have not been clearly established for the safety of this product, as herbal supplements are not as closely regulated as medications.

Safety Issues With Astragalus: An Overview

When used appropriately, astragalus is probably safe for many people. However, some people may be more likely to experience problems with to this herb. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking it if you have:
 
 
 
  • Had an organ transplant
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
     
You should also be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
